“From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?” James 4:1
Why do we have wars in the world today? Squabbles and disputes begin
with people at odds with one another. Fighting and warring start when authority
leaders and nations want what others have and will do whatever it takes to make
it their own. When war breaks out, someone must defend the innocent from the
offenders taking what isn’t theirs; sometimes, the protectors don’t return home
from the battles.
Today we pause to remember and honor the multitude of men and women
who died, giving their lives serving and protecting our nation’s freedom and that
of other countries. Testimonials from those who lost loved ones and stories and
pictures of veterans who served but didn’t come home remind us of the high cost
of the fallen’s sacrifice. The greatest battle took place on a hill called Calvary,
where Jesus died voluntarily on a cruel cross for the world’s sins. But He
conquered death’s grip; the empty tomb and the promise that He is coming back bring
hope that we will be free of wars one day. God will soon make all things new
and perfect again.
